Could you give a £300 bursary for a poorer Congolese student to get a degree ?

When the Diocese of Goma was created in 2016 we started a university. With seven faculties to meet the needs of the diocese : theology, agriculture, law, finance, education, community development and health.

The university is still small and student numbers vary between 30 and 80. In 2021 we were able to give our first Graduate Diplomas to those who had completed three years of study (photo above). In 2023 we awarded our first Bachelor’s Degrees after a further two years. Next week we will celebrate another cohort of graduates.

Upgrading to a Bachelor's Degree in a year

Recently the government have changed the number of years required for a Bachelor’s Degree from five to three, and those who have already done three under the old system, can just add one more to get the degree.

We would love for as many of the teachers as possible in our Goma schools be able to upgrade their qualification this next academic year, as well as those working with the diocese in development and finance.

We particularly want to focus on teachers in the pooer parts of town. Many of our teachers still work for next to nothing, as the majority of our schools are waiting to be officially integrated into the government system.

To give please go to https://www.stewardship.org.uk/pages/goma and mark the gift as ‘student bursary’

Final church in the camps

We failed to get permission to build a third church in the Lushagala camp, but God provided an even better solution. We were able to buy land on the edge of the camp and build a more solid church. The building work started on Monday of last week and finished on Thursday. The new parish of Lushagala will be officially opened this Sunday

Thank you as always to all who read the updates, take time to respond, and who pray and give to the work in Goma.
